480160 KO History of the Ukrainian Culture in the 19th century (2017S)

Learning outcome:
The aim of the course is to give an insight into the cultural history of Ukraine in the 19th and early 20th century as well as to reach competence in this area among the students. Knowledge of the most important periods and phenomena of Ukrainian culture during this period will be given in a historical context. The concept of culture is, on the one hand, understood as a social concept, as "the total of ways of life." On the other hand, culture is regarded as a "narrative community", which has its own narrative. In introductory lectures, the students will be introduced to the events, institutions, as well as the life and work of the people who determine the Ukrainian culture. In addition to presenting the specifics of the history of Ukraine in the 19th and early 20th century, special attention will be paid to the development of Ukrainian art, and especially to the literature. In detail, the work will be discussed in the culture of Ukraine "epochal" writers such as Taras Ševčenko, Ivan Franko, Lesja Ukrainka as well as the poets and writers of the "Executed Ukrainian Renaissance". The focus is on comparative approaches: the history of the Ukrainian culture of the period mentioned is to be found in the cultural history of the "Slavic world" as a whole.
The following historical epochs are to be discussed:
I. History of Ukrainian culture up to the middle of the 19th century (until 1848).
II. Ukrainian culture from the middle to the end of the 19th century (until 1890)
III. Ukrainian culture around 1900 until the end of the First World War and afterwards
IV. History of Ukrainian culture in the 1920-1930 years of the 20th century.
