Aims, contents and method of the course

Thermodynamic postulates; Entropy, heat, temperature; Thermodynamic equilibrium; formal relations; reversible processes; thermodynamic potentials; stability of thermodynamic systems.

Ensemble theory; phase spaces; microcanonical, canonical, grand-canonical ensembles; quantum statistics; Bose systems, photons, phonons, Bose-Einstein condensation; Fermi systems, Sommerfeld expansion, electron gas; Ising model and phase transitions.

Concepts of statistical physics, understanding the notions entropy and temperature, concepts of thermodynamics, relation between statistical physics and thermodynamics, relevance of quantum mechanics for the understanding of properties of materials
