Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The research in Indonesia will focus on the development of the city of Surabaya in East Java which has been awarded as one of the country’s most successful ‘Smart Cities’ by the Indonesian government. The field trip will be planned and realised in cooperation with the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) in Surabaya. Students of the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Vienna and the Department of Architecture of the ITS will study, in small groups, local development strategies and initiatives that have affected local governments, economies, environments and cultural projects in different urban quarters (kampung). It is expected that both groups of students will benefit from this collaborative project by establishing new contacts, broadening their understanding of different modes of teaching and learning and experiencing the advantages and challenges of interdisciplinary research. During approx. one week, the students from Vienna will be accommodated in Indonesian households. This will give them the opportunity to experience everyday life in a kampung and to build close relationships with the local people. Total duration of field trip: 3 weeks. Dates: 1 March to 9 April 2017.
