Aims, contents and method of the course

CONTENTS: The composer, painter and writer John Cage (1912-1992) was friends with the composer Morton Feldman (1926-1987) for decades. Both are among the most strikingly independent artistic personalities of the 20th century. Their partly joint development took place in three phases. This development is examined in the context of general developments in music history after 1900. Reception-historical findings are also discussed.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Overview and detailed knowledge of (1) the artistic work of Cage and Feldman, (2) their relationship and reception.

DELIVERY: eLearning supported lecture with musical examples and constant opportunity for discussion.

Assessment and permitted materials

ACHIEVEMENTS: The final interviews offer the opportunity to demonstrate overview or detailed knowledge and thus acquire a certificate.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR POSITIVE EVALUATION: At least 6 points (out of 12) earned in the final interviews.

TYPE OF ASSESSMENT: Points system (described in detail on MOODLE).
