Aims, contents and method of the course

The goal of this course is to introduce students to the basic concepts related to financial markets and economic activity. Topics covered in this course include:
- Why Study Money, Banking, and Financial Markets?
- An Overview of the Financial System
- What Is Money?
- Understanding Interest Rates
- The Behavior of Interest Rates
- Banking and the Management of Financial Institutions
- Economic Analysis of Financial Regulation
- Banking Industry: Structure and Competition
- Financial Crises
- Central Banks and the Federal Reserve System
- Tools of Monetary Policy
- The Conduct of Monetary Policy: Strategy and Tactics

Assessment and permitted materials

Evaluation will be based on homeworks and several short exams which will be held during the regular meeting hours . The exams will be closed-book.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The assessment will be based on the maximum of (i) the number of points earned on all of the exams, or (ii) the number of points earned on the two best exams plus the number of points earned for the homework performance. To pass the course, students must get at least half of the total points available.

Examination topics

All the material covered in class will be relevant for the exams.
