Aims, contents and method of the course

The course aims at introducing the students to the basic contents of macroeconomics. By the end of the course, students are expected to have acquired a basic understanding of what factors drive economic growth, what causes business cycle fluctuations, how the financial sector operates, and how nominal and real exchange rates are determined in global markets.

The course consists of five main building blocks:
1. Macroeconomic Accounts
2. Economic Growth
3. Business Cycles
4. Financial Sector
5. Open Economy and Exchange Rates

The lecture comprises 4 hours per week covering mainly theory and examples. There will be an additional tutorial, where practical exercises are discussed.

Assessment and permitted materials

The evaluation consists of following components: midterm exam, final exam and in-class quizzes (all closed-book).

The midterm exam takes place on Wednesday, May 10, 11.30-13.00.
The final exam takes place on Wednesday, June 28, 11.30-13.00.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

In total up to 100 points can be reached. The midterm exam counts for 45 points, the final exam counts for 45 points and the in-class quizzes count for 10 points.

The minimal requirement for a positive course grade is to achieve 50 points.
