Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
The seminar is dedicated to Master's and doctorate students to help them improve the writing of the dissertation and journal articles. The focus will be on writing skills in general, i.e. how to write good paragraphs, how to create a good flow of ideas, and what constitutes a good sentence in English in terms of length and information load. The course will also cover how to write a good abstract, a good introduction to a paper and how to refer to data in the text. The course is limited to 15 participants and a final approval of the candidates will take place in the first organisational meeting on March 05. Preference will be given to students working on a paper or on a research proposal at the end of their PhD studies.

Requirement for a positive grade: attendance (mandatory; sessions can be missed only with prior explanatory statement), active participation in individual and/or group excercises, handing in homework.

Prüfungsstoff
Topics covered include introductions and outlines, materials and methods, discussing data, graphs, charts and figures, results and discussions, abstracts and titles, drafting and editing, academic correspondence, applying for research funding.
Literatur
Literature will be announced throughout the course and will be made available on Moodle.
