Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

During this course, students will understand the basic rational of qualitative research and will discover its strengths and weaknesses compared to quantitative research. Students will be instructed to develop research questions that can be answered by applying qualitative methods. Furthermore, participants of this course will get insights into various qualitative methods of data gathering with special emphasis on (narrative, semi-structured, and expert) interviews. Students will learn about sampling strategies, field access and ethical implications of qualitative research. More specifically, they will apply a qualitative method and set up a respective instrument. During the course, software-based solutions for analyzing qualitative data will be introduced and applied by the students.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Throughout the semester, students will be asked to do homework and upload them on the Moodle platform. On three occasions (two within the semester, one after), they have to complete tasks which are closely related to the research process (developing research questions, setting up research instruments, analyzing qualitative data).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Participants will have to attend regularly (at least 8 out of 11 times) and complete at least 4 of 6 tasks that are provided at the end of the lessons (and uploaded on Moodle) - so-called 'Homework'. Furthermore, participants have to complete each of the three 'major tasks' ( (1) writing a proposal for a qualitative study, (2) setting up a qualitative instrument for the respective research and (3) analyzing qualitative data (which can be provided by the seminar leader) and writing the result section for a repective report.

The final course grade will be calculated by taking into account the grades for four individual tasks: active involvement (including the quality of homework; 10%); proposal for qualitative research project (30%); instrument for qualitative research (30%); data analysis and result section for a project report (30%)
