Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
The Brexit in June 2016, Donald Trump’s electoral victory in the US-election in November 2016, the presidential electoral campaign in Austria in 2016, the rise of populist parties all over Europe – all these events have fuelled discussions on political polarization: Polarization is said to be on the rise! To capture the ongoing polarization processes better, in this seminar, we will examine the various definitions of political polarization, explore polarization from a voter perspective as well as a party perspective, and look into the various ways to operationalize polarization.The overall goal of the seminar is to familiarize students with theories and recent research on political polarization. By reading the various texts on political polarization student will also get acquainted with empirical research methods in political science. Eventually, we will develop a first research outline of the seminar paper in class.
