Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The recent crisis of European Integration shall be discussed: What are the sources, the main areas of instability, the effects on democracy and policy output? Which theories can be applied? What could be done to improve the situation?

The aim of the seminar is to enable students to understand the workings of the EU's institutional system and apply theories that are indispensable for any systematic analysis of the European Union. Additionally, social scientific writing and presentation skills will be trained.

The seminar is structured into three phases: the introductory phase first presents the state of the art of research on the EU’s crisis as well as general fundamentals of European integration theory. Additionally, exercises in fundamental skills of social scientific writing (literature search, citation) will be conducted.
On the basis of this introduction, students choose their essay topics. In the second phase, students will be divided into groups according to their chosen topics and guided in developing their research design. Group consultations with the professor (for the dates, see above) need to be attended, in addition to student-only meetings in the group.
The third phase consists of plenary sessions to perform and discuss student presentations and thereby get a broad overview on the topic.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Course requirements include regular attendance and participation, several exercises (e.g. literature search on the internet and in library catalogues), the development of a research outline to be discussed in class, an oral presentation of the essay topic, and a research paper of 12-15 pages.
Furthermore, students may be asked to attend relevant public events and provide summaries or discussion papers in which central arguments of required readings are critically discussed.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Regular and active participation in the seminar is indispensable! Please check the dates, you need to participate. Intensive work during the semester, including at the very start! Written assignments 20%, active participation 30% (max. absence one half day based on written confirmation), seminar paper 50%.
