Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course will be taught together with Tewodros Getachew.

Course Description
This course gives an overview of inclusive education from an international perspective. It introduces principles, policies and philosophies underpinning inclusion. This course is designed to assist students to understand and reflect on inclusive practices and concepts from an international perspective. To portray global practices of inclusive education, examples of instances of inclusion from different countries will be discussed.

Course contents
The course relies on studying various research articles on inclusive education and its international practices. The following will be its areas of focus
- Basics of Inclusive Education as discussed in international frameworks
- International conventions, declarations and recommendations related to Inclusive Education
- Underlying concepts and conceptual frames, e.g. comparative education, intercultural perspectives, disability studies, etc.
- Target groups in Inclusive Education
- Country-specific Inclusive Education practices: e.g. Examples of Inclusive classes, schools and society in various contexts (e.g. Austria, Ethiopia, etc.).

Modes of instructional delivery
- Guided reading and discussions of literature
- Group work and reflection on texts, materials, literature, video sequences, etc.
- Group work and reflections on own perspectives and experiences
- Active review sessions/evaluation of lessons
- Reflection on the participant’s learning processes

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

- Active participation in class discussions,
- Written assignments,
- Group works,
- Seminar paper

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

- Attendance
- Active participation in class
- Submitting written assignments
- Short presentations of outcomes of group work and discussions in class
- Preparation of a seminar paper
- Submission of a learning diary

The basis for evaluation will be the seminar paper and written assignments. Part of the evaluation will be an individual oral reflection on the basis of the seminar paper and the learning diaries.

The language of instruction will be English. Seminar papers and written assignments are expected to be written in English. In exceptional cases German will be accepted upon agreement.

Prüfungsstoff

Examination will be continuous during the course and take into account active participation in class, written assignments and the seminar paper.

Literatur

Literature will be provided in the course.
