Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Sex and Sexuality receive increasing attention in contemporary philosophy - an excellent overview is Raja Harwani's (2023) Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy entry on the topic. After an introductory part with an Intro to the topic, a historical text on the development of Sigmund Freud's views of Sexuality, and Tom Nagel's seminal paper on "Sexual Perversion" (sessions 1, 2, 3) this seminar will focus on two basic issues in the contemporary debate: 1. consensual action and the nature of consent (sessions 4-10), and 2. the problem of objectification (sessions 11-12).
The seminar should provide the participants with basic knowledge of the issues discussed, competence to pursue these issues further in potential independent research, and the ability to connect these issues to relevant other issues in contemporary philosophy (especially the theory of joint action).
The method of this seminar will be close reading, group discussion based on written participant input, and a self-moderation scheme for each session.
