Prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung

The course aims to make the students read, write about, and discuss a broad sample of representative medieval European primary sources plus a few secondary analyses. The texts´production dates range from ca. 200 to ca. 1450, thus broadly from the conversion of Rome to Christianity to the end of the Middle Ages. Featured will be classics such as the Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf, the Song of Roland, and courtly romances.

Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The aim is to train students to read and analyze, as opposed to summarize, historical sources and historians´ scholarly writing. There is a short written assignment due well before every meeting of the class (to allow the instructor to bring it back with feedback in class). The American-style in-class discussion, led by the instructor, should introduce students to how to debate and back positions on the basis of the written evidence.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Engaged and constructive in-class participation, plus nine 2-page written assignments. It is advised to have taken a medieval history survey lecture or to be taking one concurrently. The instructor teaches one Tuesdays 11:30-13:00 (070110). But he will provide all needed context (very little is in fact needed) ahead of each reading.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Quality of participation and accumulation of points given for the written short papers.

Prüfungsstoff

By definition, a GR does not allow final examinations, and should not center on exams.

Literatur

Will be downloadable from Moodle. But I recommend that you buy the Beowulf and the Song of Roland in paperback, in Penguin edition. For the Beowulf, the German Reclam translation can also be used.
