Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
The Seminar will introduce students to the history and culture of the Brazilian Empire. Students are expected to fully participate in classroom discussion. They will select a topic for research, they will present their findings in an oral presentation, and, finally, they will submit a written Seminar paper. - Notice: No electronic devices are permitted in this Seminar during all class units in which students deliver their oral presentations; this policy will help students to focus on discussions and debates in class undisturbed.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
Classroom discussions will be held in English, and all papers will be written in English. - Grading is based on regular class attendence and the quality of classroom discussion, on the presentation in class of the rough draft of the paper, and on the quality of the final version of the written Seminar paper.
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
After successfully completing this Seminar, students will be familiar with various approaches to and key aspects of the politcal history and culture of the Brazilian Empire, and they will have acquired a basic knowledge of the historiography for the period in question.
Prüfungsstoff
Students will read, study, and comment on scholarly articles, texts and documents dealing with important aspects in politics, culture, and internatioanl relations of the Brazilian Empire.

All relevant information for the Seminar including texts and documents will be provided on Moodle.
