The aim of this course is to give an in-depth understanding of the covered concepts. Furthermore, the lecture will give insights into ongoing research activities in that field.

Relevant for the exam is always the content which was subject to the most recent course. The scope of the relevant course content is defined by means of the course materials made available during the most recent course. The course material consists of the slides and of the literature referenced in the material. The successful study of this course requires the thorough study of the referenced literature (books, papers, etc.). Furthermore, participation in the accompanying exercise course is strongly recommended.

It aims at the understanding the characteristics of multimedia documents and the requirements for such documents, covering concepts like multimedia presentation, multimedia document, multimedia document model, and basic and advanced facets of multimedia documents like time and space, interaction, structure and layout, quality of service, adaptation, presentation neutrality, re-use, and support for encoding semantics.It aims at the understanding of essential concepts of XML technology, one of the basic building blocks of multimedia document processing technology, the understanding of its applicability in document modelling and processing, the understanding of fundamental options for accessing multimedia documents, illustrated at the example of XML-based technology, including XML, XML DTD, Namespaces, XML Schema, DOM, XPath, XPointer, XSL, XSLT, XSL-FO, XQuery.It aims at the basic understanding of alternative languages for the exchange of data (documents), illustrated by means of RELAX NG, JSON, YAML.It aims at the understanding of the concept of metadata, covering the characteristics of metadata, the role of metadata, the creation of metadata, the notion of metadata element sets and metadata schemas. This will be illustrated by introducing prominent metadata schemes and element sets, e.g., META, LOM, Dubin Core, Exif, and metadata frameworks like RDF, RDFS, SPARQL, XMP, MPEG-7, MPEG-21.
