Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Aims: This course is concerned with the evolution of the multinational firm and the formation of the network structure of the MNC. The objective of this course is to familiarize students with a broad range of theoretical and practical perspectives on the strategy and organization of multinational firms. It endeavours to create an ability, in the course participants, to synthesise and apply the acquired knowledge in their respective collaborative research projects.

2. Foreign market entry modes
3. The International Trade & Foreign Direct Investment (FDI)
4. Strategic management of global business
5. Global human resource management
6. Relational View of Multinationals
7. Bargaining Power perspective of Global Business
8. Corporate governance in global business
9. Mergers & Acquisitions

Methods: The course will consist of lectures, presentations and case analysis. The students are expected to develop skills in evaluating international competitive strategies in multicultural environments, in designing alternative organizational forms for multinational firms, in the use of international licensing, strategic alliances, merger & acquisitions, consortia, franchising and clusters, in identifying appropriate forms of market entry, and in developing network strategies to create competitive advantage of nations, regions and cities.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Written Exam: There will be a comprehensive written exam. To assess the learning accumulated during class discussions. The exam. Will constitute of multiple choice questions, True/False questions and one essay question.
BRICS Project Assignment: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa are being profoundly debated these days as the emerging economies with enormous opportunities for the global business organizations. The purpose of the BRICS project is to provide the students with an opportunity to examine the nature and dynamics of international business activity in these four markets. In this assignment, teams of 3-4 students will act as IB consultants to devise/propose a global strategy for a business organization doing well in Austria for anyone of the BRICS countries. The scope/size/origin of the organization does not matter - it could be as small as a retail chain like Coffee day or Türkis or as large as Siemens or Red Bull - what counts the most is the technical accuracy (i.e., how well did the team use the global business concepts learned in the class).
Public Lectures: Public lectures are an integral part of this course. In these lectures, experts from the relevant field of study held discussion on the various topics/aspects relating to the global business. The participation/attendance during these lectures is mandatory for the completion of the course. Assessment Criteria: Written Exam. 60%
Group Assignment 30%
Quizzes/Class participation 10%
Minimum Requirements: For successful completion of the course, a student must secure at least 50% score in the written examination.

The goal of this course is to familiarize students with a broad range of theoretical and practical perspectives on the strategy and organization of the multinational firm as global network.
Specifically, this course is concerned with the evolution, the strategy process, the formation of the organization structure and the communication strategy of the MNC. The student is expected to develop skills in evaluating international competitive strategies in multicultural environments, in designing alternative organizational forms for multinational firms, in applying communication strategies, in the use of international licensing, strategic alliances, merger & acquisitions, consortia, franchising and clusters, in identifying appropriate forms of market entry, and in evaluating alternative corporate governance structures in different international institutional environments.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Evaluation - Total points (120)
a. 4 summaries from 4 different topics (20) (4 summaries must be submitted!)
The relevant articles are published on MOODLE.
The summary must include:
1. Summary of the author’s arguments (2 pages);
2. Critique: Discuss the strength and weaknesses of the study (1-2 pages).
b. Case Study Presentation (2-4 persons) (30)
c. Active participation in the class and the public lectures (20).
MINIMUM attendance: 75 %
d. Exam (50) – minimum 40 %!

The objective of this course is to familiarize students with a broad range of theoretical and practical perspectives on the strategy and organization of multinational firms.

Prüfungsstoff

The course will consist of four parts, lectures, short case presentations, public lectures and a final exam. The attendance on the public lectures is obligatory as it will have a wait on the overall grade.
