Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In the framework of the proseminar on the Muslim societies in the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union, students will develop a thematically relevant historical research question as part of writing the final paper and thereby deepen the techniques of academic work (literature research, identifying the current state of research on a selected topic, reading and interpreting sources, academic writing and citing, research of research literature and its evaluation, etc.). The course will start with introductory sessions on methodological and theoretical approaches to the history of Muslim communities in an imperial and colonial context. Students will work with texts on intercultural encounters, religion, legal systems and art history pertaining to Crimean Tatars and Central Asian and Caucasian Muslims in the Russian empire and the Soviet Union. During the semester, students will develop a research question, an exposé and a plan of the final paper, and will prepare a presentation of their chosen subject.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Regular attendance and participation in the class is a prerequisite for positive evaluation. Max. 3 absences are allowed, but they have to be announced to the course instructor before the sessions.
The assessment is based on the following criteria:
- active participation in the discussions in class based on prior preparation of the weekly readings
- presentation on one of the topics discussed in class
- a short exposé of the final paper
• Proseminar paper (approx. 40,000 characters (± 5%), including spaces, footnotes, title page, table of contents, bibliography, without graphics (= approx. 15 manuscript pages, 1½ lines, 12 pt.)
The assessment is based on a combination of participation in the course units, smaller written exercises, a presentation of the research results, and the final written version of the Proseminar paper (approx. 40,000 characters).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

All assessment criteria mentioned above will be assigned a score (active class participation: 0-20 points, presentation: 0-20 points, exposé: 0-10 points, final paper: 0-50 points). For a positive evaluation, the minimum number of points must be achieved for each assessment (active class participation: min. 10 points, presentation: min. 10 points, exposé: min. 5 points, paper: min. 24 points). For the final evaluation, all points are added up and grades are assigned according to the following scale:
0-48 points: 5 (unsatisfactory/failed)
49-62 points: 4 (adequate)
63-76 points: 3 (satisfactory)
77-90 points: 2 (good)
91-100 points: 1 (very good)
